DURHAM, N.H — The Hartford men's soccer team saw its 2019 season end in heartbreaking fashion, as they fell to New Hampshire, 1-0, in the America East Championship game. Seniors
Jimmy Slayton and
Aitor Elena, and sophomore
Sergi Martinez were named to the All-Tournament team. Slayton also received the Elite 18 award for having the highest GPA of all participants in the championship game.
Hartford finishes out its 2019 campaign with a 12-5-4 overall with the loss, while the Wildcats improved to 14-1-3 with the victory.
NEW HAMPSHIRE 1, HARTFORD 0
The Wildcats were the first to strike as they found the back of the net in the 4th minute from a Josh Bauer header. New Hampshire would continue to pile on the pressure in the first half, but the Hawks defense would stand strong and deny the Wildcats from extending its lead. Senior goalkeeper
Jimmy Slayton would make multiple great saves in the half, with his best coming in the 38th minute as he dove to his right to deny a shot destined for the top corner. The Hawks would go into the break trailing, 1-0.
Hartford would dominate the majority of possession and chances in the second half, as they looked for the equalizing goal. Nyrik Anotine would find himself on a breakaway in the 62nd minute, but his shot fell straight into the arms of the UNH goalkeeper.
Sergi Martinez would have another great opportunity to level the score in the 65th minute, but his shot was also straight at the UNH goalie. Slayton would come up big again for Hartford as he made a brilliant save on a shot that was heading towards the bottom corner in the 78th minute. The Hawks would continue to pile on the pressure late, but would see its comeback effort fall short, as they fell to New Hampshire, 1-0.
