Wildcats Slip Past Hawks in Walk-Off Fashion

ABILENE, Texas – Abilene Christian took game one of the weekend's series, walking-off against Hartford baseball for the 2-1 victory Friday evening.
 
Sophomore Nicholas Dombkowski matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts, as the Hawks fell to 0-4 on the year. Senior Kody Claborn registered the Wildcats' lone RBI, as Abilene Christian improves to 5-5 on the season.

Hartford struck first in the low scoring affair in the second inning as sophomore Drew DeMArtino and junior Nik Pagan both reached base, putting runners at first and second. Senior Drew Holtgrieve then stepped in and singled up the middle, bringing Pagan around to score and giving Hawks the early 1-0 lead.
 
The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the fifth as junior Dalton Dunn tripled to right-center field and then scored on a throwing error tying the game at one. Abilene Christian then finished off the comeback in the bottom of the ninth as Claborn came to bat with two on and singled to right field, plating the winning run and giving the Wildcats the 2-1 win in game one of the weekend series.
 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • Dombkowski (0-1) was dominant, but did not factor into the decision, as he pitched seven innings, allowing three hits, zero earned runs and struck out 10
  • Pagan registered his third multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a run scored. He is fourth in the America East, batting .438, just behind teammate sophomore John Thrasher (.462)
  • Hartford threatened numerous times in the series opener, but left eight runners on base
