WEST HARTFORD, Conn. –Hartford softball earned head coach
Angie Churchill her first career America East win, as the Hawks took game one of the doubleheader with Stony Brook, 4-1 and 9-0, Saturday afternoon.
Sophomores
Lily Sencer and
Danielle Rocheleau each finished with an RBI, as the Hawks improve to 11-11 overall and 1-1 in the America East. Senior Irena Rivera record three RBI on the day, as the Seawolves improve to 13-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
GAME ONE: HARTFORD 4 STONY BROOK 1
Stony Brook opened the scoring in game one as Melissa Rahrich took advantage of a throwing error, after taking third on a fly ball to right field, making the score 1-0.
Hartford tied the game in the fourth in a similar fashion as freshman
Paige Fedak singled to centerfield, advancing Rocheleau to third. Rocheleau then scored from third after a throwing error from the center fielder, knotting the score at one.
Stony Brook threatened in the top of the sixth, putting runners on first and third with two outs. Freshman
Julianna Kocenski stepped up and slammed the store, striking out junior Taylor Pechin for the final out of the inning.
The Hawks created some breathing room in the bottom of the sixth with two more runs, the first coming off a sacrifice fly by Sencer, plating freshman
Emma Curry. Mianti then came across for the fourth run and final run of the game, scoring on a throwing error by the third basemen. Kocenski Stony Brook batters down in order in the top of the seventh, securing the 4-1 victory for Hartford.
GAME TWO: STONY BROOK 9 HARTFORD 0 (SIX INNINGS)
The Seawolves took control of game two from the jump, scoring three runs in the first inning highlighted by a RBI double down the left field line by junior Jordyn Nowakowski. Stony Brook added two runs in the second, one in the fourth and three in the sixth to take game two, 9-0, in six innings.
Freshman Shelbi Denham was dominant in the circle for the Seawolves, allowing zero runs on three hits and striking out six.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Not only is it Churchill's first America East win of her career, it is Hartford's first conference win since April 23, 2016 when the Hawks topped UMass Lowell, 8-4, in eight innings
- Kocenski (7-5) earned the win in game one, pitching her sixth complete game of the season, allowing one run on four hits and striking out four
- Rocheleau went 2-6 with a double on the day, moving her season batting average to .478. She began the weekend third in Division I in the category and 21st in OBP (.545)
