Hawks Move on to America East Semifinals with Win Over Retrievers

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – For the third consecutive season, Hartford women's hoops is headed to the America East semifinals after topping UMBC, 65-48, Wednesday evening.

Senior Lindsey Abed scored a game-high 21 points, as the Hawks improve to 22-9 overall. Janee'a Summers and O'lesheya Braxton both finished with 13 points, as the Retrievers finish the season 10-20.

UMBC jumped out to the early 13-9 lead in the first quarter with 1:48 remaining in the first quarter after a lay up by Braxton. Hartford answered in the second quarter, outscoring the Retrievers 20-8, scoring 10 points off turnovers with 11 steals in the period. Abed capped off the first half with an off balance three-pointer to beat the buzzer and give the Hawks a 31-21 lead at the intermission.
 
UMBC cut into Hartford's lead once again in the third quarter, turning the Hawks' 10-point advantage into four as Braxton scored a lay up with a second left in the period to make the score 43-39 heading into the fourth quarter. Hartford, however, took control of the game in the final period, pushing its lead to as many as 19 points, as the Hawks secured the 65-48 victory.
 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • With her 21 point effort tonight, Abed has now scored in double-figures in 10 straight games, including 20 or more points in four of those games
  • Junior Sierra DaCosta shot 6-11 from the floor to tally 17 points on the night. She is averaging 12.7 points over her last seven games
  • For the fourth consecutive game, Hartford scored 20 or more points off of turnovers, finishing the game with 23 points. The Hawks are averaging 21.4 points off of turnovers this season
  • Hartford got out on the break tonight, scoring 20 fast break points. It is only the fourth time this season that the Hawks have scored 20 or more points in transition
