Softball Takes Two From Black Bears

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Hartford softball secured its first America East series victory since 2013, topping Maine, 1-0 and 4-2, Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Julianna Kocenski walked away with the win in both games, as the Hawks improve to 15-21 overall and 3-7 in the America East. Senior Laurine German recorded the team's lone RBI, as the Black Bears fall to 8-22 on the season and 1-7 in the conference.

GAME ONE: HARTFORD 1 MAINE 0
After a scoreless three innings to start the contest, freshman Paige Fedak put her mark on the game, smashing a solo home run over the left field fence for the 1-0 lead.

Kocenski took it from there, allowing only one hit and two base runners the rest of the way, securing Hartford's second shutout of the season, 1-0.

GAME TWO: HARTFORD 4 MAINE 2
The Hawks wasted little time scoring in game two, putting up two runs in the opening inning. After Barranger singled to start the game, she made her way to second on a passed ball and then took advantage of a throwing error by the shortstop to score the first run of the game.

Hartford pushed its lead to 2-0 in the same inning, as sophomore Kiana Harris hit a sacrifice fly to center field, plating sophomore Danielle Rocheleau and giving the Hawks the 2-0 lead.

After Maine tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, Hartford answered in the seventh inning. With runners on second and third, Rocheleau stepped in and slashed a double down the right field line, bringing both sophomore Lily Sencer and junior Madison Hilimire around to score, giving the Hawks a 4-2 lead.

The Black Bears brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Kocenski forced freshman Keely Clark to fly out to center field and wrap up the 4-2 victory.
