The Retrievers capitalized on a plethora of first-quarter penalties by Hartford, taking a 3-2 edge by going 3-for-3 on the EMO. The two sides would exchange 2-0 spurts, before freshman
Hunter Krauss and senior Jinks delivered back-to-back strikes to put the Hawks up, 6-5, with less than a minute left in the half.
But Hartford would not hold on to that lead before the break, as UMBC scored twice within the final 10 seconds of the half to take a 7-6 advantage at halftime. The Retrievers continued their run into the second half, as Michael Zichelli made it an 8-6 lead with 11:13 left in the third. The Hawks managed to pull within one on two occasions down the stretch, but the Retrievers scored two of the final three goals to seal the win.
