Softball Punches Ticket to America East Tournament with Victory Over UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. –On the final day of the regular season, Hartford softball punched its ticket to the America East Tournament with a 6-3 victory over UMBC Saturday afternoon.
 
Freshman Emma Curry hit her fifth home run of the season, and her second in as many games,as the Hawks improve to 20-29 overall and 6-12 in conference play. Anna Lonchar finished with a home run and a team-high two RBI, as the Retrievers fall to 26-22 on the season, and 7-11 in conference play.

After UMBC took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the second, Hartford exploded for five runs in the top of fifth. Curry started the rally for the Hawks, sending a home run over the left field fence. Junior Amber Mianti then took advantage of a throwing error by the shortstop, scoring from third and placing sophomore Nicolette Barranager on first. Sophomore Danielle Rocheleau brought the score to level with one out, lacing a single to centerfield, scoring Barranger. Sophomore Kiana Harris wrapped up the inning and gave Hartford its first lead of the game, knocking a single to left center field, plating two runs and put the Hawks on top, 5-3.
 
Hartford pushed its lead to three in the top of seventh, as sophomore Lily Sencer swiped third base and then came around to score on the throwing error by the catcher, making the score 6-3.
 
Freshman Julianna Kocenski shut the door on any sort of rally, putting the UMBC batters down in order in the bottom of the seventh for the 6-3 victory. 
 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • Hartford will enter the America East Tournament as the five seed and will open up on Wednesday at 11 a.m. against UMBC
  • It is the Hawks' first trip to the conference since 2017
  • Hartford reaches 20 regular-season wins for the first time since 2013 when the team finished the year with 21
  • Kocenski (14-15) went the distance, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out five
  • Harris registered a team-high two RBI
  • Curry and Rocheleau paced the Hawks with two hits each

Hartford softball will host and open next week's America East Tournament on Wednesday as the five seed. First pitch against UMBC is set for 11 a.m.
