Knowles, Deaconson Earn AE Helping Hands Honors

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – University of Hartford student-athletes Jalay Knowles (women's basketball) and Christian Deaconson (men's soccer) have been named to the America East Helping Hands Team, the conference announced at its annual awards dinner on Thursday evening.

In its sixth year, the Helping Hands Team recognizes one male and female student-athlete from each of the nine America East institutions for their exemplary efforts in the classroom and in their local communities. The award also recognizes student-athletes' dedication to being leaders both on and off the field.

Both Knowles and Deaconson are first-time members of the America East Helping Hands Team.

Knowles, who graduated last month from the College of Arts and Sciences with a degree in psychology, posted a 3.03 cumulative grade-point average. Despite suffering an injury that ended her playing career during her sophomore season, she has continued to be a positive leader and integral member of, not only the women's basketball program, but the entire athletic department as an intern and through her involvement with SAAC.

Deaconson, a rising senior who is a member of the Hartford Hawks Academic Honor Roll, currently holds a 3.15 cumulative GPA. The health science major saw action in eight games last season, starting four, he has been a driving force for Hartford's SAAC and has participated in a handful of volunteer youth soccer clinics in the Greater Hartford region.
