BANGOR, ME. — Sophomore
Sierra Smith recorded her first career double-double with career-highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds, as the Hartford women's basketball team fell to in the America East opener, 87-73, on the road at the Cross Insurance Center on Thursday evening. With the loss, the Hawks fell to 0-14 on the year and 0-1 in the America East, while the Black Bears improved to 5-10 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
MAINE 87, HARTFORD 73
The two sides found themselves knotted at 15-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Black Bears used the first 2:46 of the second quarter to go on an 11-2 run, opening up a 26-17 lead over the Hawks. After Hartford cut the deficit to 26-22 with 5:33 left in the half, Maine responded with a 9-3 run to push its lead back to double-digits. The Hawks were able to outscore the Black Bears 6-2 in the final three minutes of the half to go into the break trailing 37-31.
Maine used the first 8:17 of the second half to go on a 31-12 run, extending its lead to a commanding 23 points. The deficit proved to be too much for the Hawks, as they eventually fell 87-73.
