Second-Half Rally Leads Men's Hoops Past Binghamton, 73-57

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Grad transfer Malik Ellison scored a team-high 19 points to lead the Hartford men's basketball team past visiting Binghamton, 73-57, on Wednesday evening. The Hawks (12-10) used a 10-0 run midway through the second half and a 10-of-12 effort from the free-throw line in the closing minutes to seal the win and improve to 5-2 in the America East.
 
George Tinsley led all scorers with 25 points for Binghamton, which falls to 8-13 overall and 2-6 in league play.

HARTFORD 73, BINGHAMTON 57

With both sides exchanging blows to an 11-11 tie, sophomore D.J. Mitchell provided a spark off the bench, scoring Hartford's next eight points behind back-to-back threes to make it a 19-13 lead with 6:56 left. Binghamton came back to take its first lead of the game, 22-21, on a Brenton Mills layup with 3:28 to go, but the Hawks held the Bearcats scoreless and capped off a 7-0 run with a Hunter Marks putback at the buzzer to take a 28-22 advantage into the break.
 
The Hawks came out of the break hot, going 4-of-5, including 2-of-2 from three to take a 38-24 lead. The Bearcats remained within striking distance and cut the lead to four at 46-42 with 9:27 left thanks to Tinsley's hot hand, but Hartford answered with 10-straight points to push the lead back to 14 with 6:42 to go.

  • Ellison scored in double figures for the 10th time this season in just 12 appearances
  • Flowers and Marks joined Ellison in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively
  • Corralling nine rebounds, Flowers came one rebound short of his first career double-double
  • Grad student Traci Carter, who tallied nine points, dished out six assists, marking the 12th time this season he records five-or-more dimes
  • Picking up their sixth straight win against the Bearcats, the Hawks improve to 26-13 all-time, including 17-3 under head coach John Gallagher 
  • Tinsley had a hot hand from behind the arc, knocking down six of the Bearcats' eight three-pointers on the evening
