BOSTON – The University of Hartford Department of Athletics placed 74 student-athletes on the 2019 America East Fall Honor Roll, the organization announced on Wednesday. A conference-best 87 percent of Hawks student-athletes received America East Academic Honor Roll distinction (3.0 GPA), with 70 percent of those recognized (62) receiving Commissioner's Honor Roll status for earning a 3.5 GPA or higher.
Student-athletes who were members of the men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and volleyball teams for the Hawks and had a GPA of 3.0 or higher were named to the America East Academic Honor Roll. In addition to landing the highest percentage of student-athletes on the Honor Roll in the America East, the Hawks also had the highest percentage of student-athletes earn Commissioner's Honor Roll status, with Hartford coming in nearly 12 percent higher than the next closest institution.
In total, the Hawks saw 300 of its 389 student-athletes (77 percent) earn a 3.0 or better in the 2019 fall semester. Most impressively, all 17 teams finished with at least a 3.0 GPA this fall as Hartford posted a 3.39 GPA as a department this past semester.
Setting the pace for the Hawks was the women's soccer team, which saw each of the roster's 24 members receive the honor from the conference, highlighted by 21 student-athletes earning Commissioner's Honor Roll. In addition to the squad posting a department-best 3.89 GPA, an impressive 12 women's soccer team members turned in a perfect 4.0 GPA this past fall to lead each of Hartford's teams.
Of those 12, senior
Sierra Stone was recently recognized by the conference earlier this month after she was named the America East Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete.
Volleyball also had an outstanding semester in the classroom, as it joined women's soccer in having each of its members (14 student-athletes) hold at least a 3.0 GPA. Just one other team in the America East (Stony Brook volleyball) joined the Hawks' women's soccer and volleyball squads in achieving this impressive feat. All but one member of the volleyball team was named to the Commissioner's honor roll, with
Megan Anderson,
Nicole Etta,
Robin Helms, and
Abby Nash each registering perfect 4.0 GPAs.
The men's cross country team saw all but two of its members (92 percent) honored by the conference, highlighted by
Cole Cayer,
Luke Fehrman and
Danny Reynolds, who each earned Commissioner's Honor Roll status by registering a 4.0. The men's cross country team also held the fifth-highest team GPA across all Division I programs in the fall semester.
The women's cross country team had a successful semester in the classroom, with 83 percent of the roster earning Academic Honor Roll selections. All 10 members who were honored earned Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction.
Hannah D'Orso,
Ivy Walker and Gabriella Zeller highlighted the roster with perfect 4.0 GPAs.
Two men's soccer players –
Alec Boyd and
Jimmy Slayton – led the way with 4.0 GPAs. Slayton also highlighted the fall semester by being named the America East Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete. The squad landed 18 Honor Roll members, nine of which received Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction.
America East student-athletes continued to set new conference standards in the classroom. Seventy-four percent (823) of those who competed in fall sports achieved Honor Roll status, while more than half of those recognized (510) earned Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction.
