Softball Sweeps First Day of the Pirate Classic

NORFOLK, Va. –Hartford softball opened up the Pirate Classic with a pair of wins, knocking off Radford and hosts Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks started the day off with a 5-3 victory over Radford, before beating the Spartans, 5-4, in dramatic fashion to end the day. Sophomore Danielle Rocheleau had a monster day at the plate, racking up two home runs and four RBI across the two games, while fellow sophomore Julianna Kocenski and freshman Lauren Card picked up their first victories inside the circle.

HARTFORD 5, RADFORD 3
In game one of the day, Hartford and Radford would enter the third inning deadlocked, before Radford jumped out to an early 1-0. The score would remain the same until Hartford exploded for five runs in the fifth inning. After Gabrielle Barranger, who was pinch running for Julianna Kocenski, stole second base, Emma Curry ripped a double into left center, plating Barranger and tying the game at one. Kiana Harris then stepped up, singling to center to send Curry home and give the Hawks a 2-1 lead. Harris would then score herself after a wild pitch followed by a two-run homerun from Danielle Rocheleau, giving the Hawks a 5-1 lead. Radford would score two more in the final two innings, but Lauren Card pitched strong inside the circle, preserving the 5-3 win and earning the save.

Game two would feature the Hawks displaying their power hitting. After a Mara Sczecienski single to lead off the inning, Rocheleau would pick up where she left off in game one, launching another two-run bomb to give Hartford an early 2-0 lead. Kelsey Galevich would then step up in the third inning with two runners on and continue her hot start to the season, belting a three-run blast to right and give the Hawks a 5-0 lead after three. Norfolk State would then begin to mount a comeback, cutting the lead to 5-4 after going on a two-out rally in the final inning. Kocenski would come on in relief and pick up the final out of the game to perserve a Hartford win.
