GREENSBORO, Ga. –Hartford split its first two games of the 2020 season at the Bash in the Boro Tournament, defeating Army 12-5 in a thrilling fashion before falling to hosts Georgia Southern, 10-2 in the last game of the day. The Hawks offense exploded late in game one against Army, scoring nine runs in the final inning to complete the comeback victory.
HARTFORD 12, ARMY 5
Hartford took a nearly lead in the game after
Kelsey Galevich singled down the right field line to bring home
Danielle Rocheleau. Army would then score three unanswered runs before the Hawks tied the game up at 3-3 in the top of the fifth after capitalizing on a muffed throw and a passed ball. The Black Knights would regain the lead, 5-3, heading into the final inning. The seventh inning would be monstrous for the Hawks.
Emma Armstrong started the rally with an RBI single before Rocheleau unbelievably beat a tag at home plate to tie the game up at 5 a piece. The Hawks would add on seven more runs in the inning, highlighted by a three RBI double by
Mara Sczecienski to complete the comeback and win the first game of the season, 12-5.
GEORGIA SOUTHERN 10, HARTFORD 2 (6)
In game two, Georgia Southern jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. The Hawks would answer back in the fourth inning when Galevich scored on a
Samantha Nagel sac fly to cut the lead to four. The Eagles would then extend their lead the following inning putting up three runs before the Hawks would pull back another run in the sixth when Galevich reached home off a
Haley Cassidy RBI double. Georgia Southern would score twice in the bottom half of the sixth, to take home the 10-2 win.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Sczecienski and Armstrong started their Hartford careers off strong, finishing the day with three RBI each
- Sophomore Julianna Kocenski (0-0) got the start in game one, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out three
- Freshman Caylee English (1-0) would earn the first win of her career after pitching one inning in relief allowing no hits and striking out one
- Freshman Lauren Card (0-1) got the ball in game two, allowing six earned runs on eight hits and striking out one
- Galevich was impressive in game two, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring both runs for the Hawks
