Women's Hoops Comes Up Short in First of Two Against Stony Brook

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. —  Senior guard Jada Lucas led the Hawks with 10 points, as the Hartford women's basketball team fell to Stony Brook, 67-47, at Chase Arena inside Reich Family Pavilion on Saturday afternoon. 

With the loss the Hawks fell to 3-8 on the season and in the America East, while the Seawolves improved to 9-4 on the season and 7-2 in conference-play.

The Seawolves used the opening three minutes of the contest to go 4-of-5 from the field, jumping out to a 9-2 lead to force a Hartford timeout. Out of the timeout Hartford responded with an 11-4 run, capped by an Abby Streeter floater to knot the game at 13-13 with 1:54 to go in the period. However, Stony Brook's Gigi Gonzalez nailed a three-pointer from the wing at the end of the quarter to give the Seawolves a 16-13 advantage entering the second.

Stony Brook used the first 5:20 of the period to outscore Hartford 15-6 to push its lead 31-19. After a Jordan McLemore baseline jumper and Jada Lucas three cut the Hawks' deficit to seven with 3:27 to go before the break, Stony Brook outscored Hartford 5-2 to close the half, taking a 36-26 lead into halftime. 

After Hartford trimmed the deficit to nine points, Stony Brook went on an 11-2 run to take an 18-point lead. However, Hartford used the final 2:50 of the third quarter to outscore Stony Brook 7-2, capped by a three-pointer from Charlette Leurs to cut the Seawolves lead to 51-38 entering the final period.

Hartford was able to cut the deficit to as close as 10 with 8:51 to go in regulation, however, Stony Brook's 10-0 run essentially put the game out of reach before claiming victory, 67-47.
