Men's Soccer Slips, 2-0, at Vermont

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Hartford men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at Vermont Wednesday night. The teams were evenly matched and scoreless past the midpoint in the first half, when the Hawks' Pablo Basarte picked up a red card in the 26th minute. Armed with a man advantage, Vermont (8-3-1, 3-1-0 America East) outshot the Hawks 36-5 in the contest and capitalized with goals from Alex Nagy and Zach Barrett.

It was the second consecutive conference setback for Hartford (3-8-3, 1-4-0 AE), which will host Binghamton for Senior Day on Saturday (Oct. 16). The Hawks will honor Basarte, Tomer Drimmer and Nick Benjamin prior to the game. Kickoff from Al-Marzook field at Alumni Stadium is set for 4 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Nagy got the Catamounts on the board in the 40th minute, cutting through the heart of the Hawks' defense and delivering a low line-drive off the far post past Hartford goalkeeper Rotem Fadida.

Barrett's goal came just after halftime, on a Catamounts corner kick. Nagy delivered a pass deep into the box and Barrett, with position in front of Hartford's defense, redirected the ball high and to the left to make it 2-0 in the 53rd minute.

Fadida finished with a career-high 10 saves in the losing effort.

INSIDE THE BOX & NOTES
  • Shots were even, 2-2, early in the contest but tilted heavily in Vermont's favor following Basarte's ejection, with the Catamounts holding a 34-3 advantage the rest of the way
  • Vermont led in shots on goal (10-2) and corners (9-4)
  • Fadida's 10 saves set a new career high, replacing his previous high of eight against Villanova (Aug. 30, 2021)
  • It was the most saves by a Hawk since Jimmy Slayton recorded 11, against Binghamton, on Nov. 2, 2019
  • Wednesday's match was just the fifth time this season the Hawks have allowed multiple goals in a game
  • Sophomore Nate Becher accounted for both of Hartford's shots on goal

NEXT ON TAP
With just three America East games remaining, the Hawks are heading into the home stretch of their conference schedule. Hartford will host two of its final three game, beginning with Binghamton this Saturday. Kickoff from Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium is set for 4 p.m.

The Hawks lead the all-time series, 12-9-4, having swept both matchups against the Bearcats during the spring 2021 season. Hartford is riding a four-game winning streak against Binghamton, with three shutouts in that stretch.
