Maurina Drops Career-High 18 Points as Women's Hoops Falls to Houston Baptist

HOUSTON — Sophomore Paula Maurina dropped a career -high 18 points while graduate student Abby Streeter scored a career-high 13 points as the Hartford women's basketball team fell, 81-56, to Houston Baptist. The Hawks dip to 0-3 on the young season while the Huskies improve to 3-1. 
 
HOUSTON BAPTIST 81, HARTFORD 56
The Hawks started the game strong, jumping out to a 5-2 lead after a Streeter three-pointer and a Nina Farkic layup. The Huskies would utilize a 7-0 run, featuring four three pointers by Streeter, to take a 14-8 lead. The Hawks cut the lead to one at 19-18 following a Maurina layup andwent on to tie the game up at 25 apiece after a Sierra Smith layup. Houston Baptist would respond with a 9-0 run to retake the lead. The Huskies would go into the half leading, 40-30.
 
After the break, Hartford closed the gap to five after a Farkic jumper, but an 8-0 Husky run kept the Hawks from getting back into the game. Houston Baptist would go into the fourth quarter leading, 62-43. The Houston Baptist advantage would prove too much, as the Hawks dropped the inaugural meeting between the two schools, 81-56.

  • Streeter, who started the game a perfect 4-for-4 from three, finished with a career-high 13 points
  • Junior Carmen Villalobos grabbed a team-high six rebounds

  • Timia Jefferson led all scorers with 23 points
  • The Huskies scored 34 of their points off of 32 Hartford turnovers
