Baseball Earns Sunday Sweep Over Binghamton, 2-1 and 6-2

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Harford baseball team swept its Sunday doubleheader with Binghamton, walking off against the Bearcats in game one, 2-1, before picking up a 6-2 victory in game two, on Sunday afternoon at Fiondella Field.
 
Sophomore Derek Tenney and graduate student Zachary Ardito led the offense with three RBI's apiece on the day, as the Hawks improved to 3-1 on the season and in the America East. With the losses, Binghamton falls to 1-3 on the campaign and in the America East.

GAME ONE: HARTFORD 2, BINGHAMTON 1
Hartford struck first in the bottom of the first after Kyle Hawes served a two-out RBI single to center, plating John Thrasher to go up 1-0 on Binghamton. 

Despite being shutout the first four innings, the Bearcats got a run back after Shane Marshall's RBI groundout knotted the contest at 1-1. However, Hartford had a chance to walk-off in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases juiced and one out with Derek Tenney stepping to the plate. Up in the count, Tenney was hit by a pitch, earning the RBI and walk-off win for the Hawks.
 
GAME TWO: HARTFORD 6, BINGHAMTON 2
Binghamton got on the board first, plating a run in the second on a groundout. However, Hartford tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third after Zach Ardito reached second on an infield single and error in the field to score Donnie Cohoon from third. Two batters later, Tenney stepped to the play and served an RBI single to left to plate Ardito, giving Hartford a 2-1 lead. 

After Hartford added a run in the sixth, the Hawks tacked on three more runs in the seventh. Ardito broke the game wide open with a two-run double to right center, followed by an RBI single by Tenney two batters later to give Hartford a 6-1 lead.

Binghamton added a run in the eighth, but eventually fell to the Hawks, 6-2.
 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • Graduate student Nathan Florence (1-0) got the start went the distance in game one, tossing seven complete innings, allowing one run on six hits, while striking out seven
  • Tremayne Cobb Jr. tallied two hits and scored the game-winning run in the opening contest
  • Cobb followed with an RBI in game two
  • Tenney's walk-off RBI was the first of his career
  • Junior Tim Blaisdell (1-0) got the start and earned the win, logging six innings, giving up one earned run on three hits and striking out five batters in the process
  • Ardito went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI's
  • Tenney went 3-for-4 in game two with two RBI's
 
NEXT ON TAP
Hartford will be back in action on Saturday, March 27, when it opens the weekend series against NJIT with a doubleheader. First pitch from Fiondella Field is set for noon.
