VESTAL, N.Y. — The Hartford women's lacrosse team's comeback bid came up short on Saturday, as the Hawks dropped a 20-12 decision at Binghamton. Junior
Jessica Harrison had a career day, accounting for half of her team's offense with a personal-best six goals, while sophomore
Shannon Tuozzo also added a hat trick with three scores for the Hawks (0-6, 0-6 AE).
Binghamton (2-3), which was led by a seven-goal effort from Paige Volkmann, moves to 2-3 in conference play.
BINGHAMTON 20, HARTFORD 12
The Bearcats got off to a hot start, scoring five of the game's first six goals of the day to take the early lead. Harrison ended a three-goal spurt with her first of three tallies, but the Bearcats answered with a 4-0 run to go up, 9-2, with 15:44 left in the first.
Hartford got things going in the latter part of the opening half, finding the back of the net three times during that stretch. Senior
Debbie Phillips, Harrison and Tuozzo each scored as the Bearcats took a 13-5 advantage into the halftime break.
Out of the break, Binghamton struck first, with Hayley Weltner making it a nine-goal advantage 55 seconds in. The Hawks mustered up a big rally, though, with a pair of goals from Tuozzo and one apiece from Harrison and Montes slashing the deficit to five at 14-9 with 21:10 to go.
But the Bearcats had a response of their own. With 16:21 left, Jesse Barer found the back of the net to spark a 3-0 spurt that made it 17-9 with 10:39 to go. The two sides would combine for six scores over the final 8:34 — with all three of Hartford's goals coming from Harrison — to provide the final 20-12 margin.
