Baseball Sweeps UAlbany in Saturday Doubleheader at Dunkin' Donuts Park

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Hartford baseball team celebrated its Senior Day sweeping its doubleheader over UAlbany at home, walking-off with a win in the opener, 8-7, before taking the nightcap, 12-6, on Saturday afternoon at Dunkin' Donuts Park.
 
With the sweep, the Hawks improved to 11-11 on the season and in the America East, while the Great Danes fell to 13-16 on the campaign and 11-11 in the America East.

GAME ONE: HARTFORD 8, UALBANY 7 (10 innings)
After two scoreless innings, UAlbany struck for three runs in the third to jump out to a 3-0 advantage. The Hawks responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 3-3. John Thrasher got the rally started with an RBI double to cut the deficit to 3-1 for the Hawks. Zachary Ardito followed with an infield single to score Drew DeMartino from first, then an RBI groundout by Devin Kellog plated Thrasher to tie the contest.

UAlbany added a run in the fourth to retake the lead, 4-3, before the Hawks knotted the contest at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning after Rob Carmody's sacrifice fly scored Tremayne Cobb Jr. from third. However, the Great Danes responded with three runs in the fifth to push ahead 7-4.

The Hawks scored twice in the sixth to cut the deficit to a run. Trailing by one entering the seventh, Thrasher was hit by a pitch to start the inning then stole second. Ardito lined a double to the left field corner to plate Thrasher, tying the contest at 7-7 to force extra innings.

Freshman Tremayne Cobb Jr. led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a double down the left field line to put the Hawks in scoring position. Two batters later, Cohoon singled to score Cobb Jr., earning the Hawks an 8-7 walk-off win.


GAME TWO: HARTFORD 12, UALBANY 6
The Hawks struck first for five runs in the first for an early advantage, highlighted by RBI singles from Bryce Ramsay and Kyle Hawes

After being held scoreless through the opening three innings, UAlbany plated two in the fourth to trim the Hartford lead to 5-2. However, the Hawks responded with three runs of their own in the fourth, powered by a two-run single by Thrasher to push ahead 8-2.

The deficit proved to be too great for the Great Danes, as Hartford eventually held on for the 12-6 victory.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • Graduate pitcher Nathan Florence (2-2) got the start and took the no-decision in game one, allowing one earned run on six hits in four innings of work
  • Florence added seven strikeouts in the outing
  • Freshman Coleman Picard (1-0) got the win, allowing no runs in two innings or relief
  • Senior Peter Myers tossed three scoreless innings of relief
  • Carmody, Cohoon and Ardito led the offense for the Hawks in the opener, collecting two RBI apiece
  • Thrasher added two hits, an RBI, two walks and four stolen bases in the first contest
  • Junior Tim Blaisdell (2-1) got the start and took the no-decision, allowing four runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work
  • Senior James Judenis (2-0) picked up the win, allowing one run in 0.2 innings of relief
  • Ramsay led the Hawks with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap
  • Thrasher added two RBI in the win as well
 
NEXT ON TAP

The Hawks return to action on Saturday, May 1, when they open its four-game series against UMass Lowell with a doubleheader. Doubleheaders on both days are set for noon starts.
