ALBANY, N.Y. – The Hartford baseball team was swept in its doubleheader with UAlbany on the road, dropping the opener, 11-7, before falling, 5-4, in the nightcap on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field.
With the losses, the Hawks dropped to 15-15 on the season and in the America East, while the Great Danes improved to 18-19 on the campaign and 16-14 in the America East.
GAME ONE: UALBANY 11, HARTFORD 7
The Hawks struck first in the opening inning for three runs, behind RBI singles from sophomore
Derek Tenney and graduate student
Zachary Ardito. Trailing 3-0, the Great Danes plated three runs in the third and a run in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead over Hartford.
Trailing 4-3 entering the fifth, Hartford was able to knot the contest at 4-4 behind graduate student
Bryce Ramsay's bases-loaded walk. The Hawks took a 5-4 lead after senior
John Thrasher scored from third on a passed ball. Hartford pushed its lead to 6-4 in the sixth inning, behind redshirt junior
Tim Dickson's RBI triple. Sophomore
Tremayne Cobb Jr. immediately followed with an RBI single to score Dickson to give the Hawks a three-run lead.
However, UAlbany plated seven runs in the sixth and held on for the 11-7 victory.
GAME TWO: UALBANY 5, HARTFORD 4
The Hawks took an early 1-0 in the second inning following freshman
Daniel Burnett's solo homer over the centerfield fence. Cobb Jr. followed with a solo homer of his own in the third inning to give Hartford a two-run advantage. The Great Danes responded with a run of their own in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-2 lead entering the seventh.
Trailing 5-2 entering the ninth, Cobb Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk to trim the deficit to 5-3. Thrasher immediately followed with an RBI single to left to cut the deficit to a run. However, the Hawks stranded two in the inning, eventually falling, 5-4.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Sophomore pitcher Ken Turner (0-1) got the start and took the no-decision in game one, allowing four earned runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work
- Freshman pitcher Coleman Picard (1-2) took the loss after giving up five earned runs in relief
- Cobb Jr. led the offense with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI
- Tenney, Ramsay, Ardito and Dickson contributed an RBI apiece in the loss
- Junior Tim Blaisdell (3-2) got the start and took the loss in the nightcap, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits
- Cobb Jr. led the offense in the second contest with two RBI
- Thrasher and Burnett contributed an RBI apiece in the loss
NEXT ON TAP
The Hawks return to action on Saturday, May 15, when they open its four-game home series against Maine with a doubleheader. Game one of the doubleheader is set for a noon start at Fiondella Field.
