NORMAN, Okla. – Senior
Matthew Schwab from the Hartford men's golf team was named to the Division I PING All-Northeast Region Team, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced.
Schwab, who graduated his past May, put together a decorated campaign for the Hawks in 2020-21. The Chandler, Ariz., native led the team with a career-low 72.87 stroke average, which was more than a one-stroke improvement from his previous career-best mark of 74.36, set in 2018-19. In addition, that mark is the fourth-best in a single-season in program history.
The postseason honor is not the first for Schwab this season. In April, he was tabbed All-Conference Honorable Mention by the Big Sky. In addition, Schwab was named the Big Sky's Golfer of the Week on April 22 after leading Hartford to a runner-up finish at the Doc Gimmler with a seventh-place showing.
"It was great to see how Matt progressed as both a student and as a golfer during his four years here at Hartford," said head coach
Pete Stankevich. "For him to make All-Big Sky Conference and be named to the PING All-Northeast Region Team in his senior year, especially with all of the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic presented, is just amazing. His progress from 2017, when he redshirted as a freshman, to now, has been great to see."
This spring, Schwab finished as Hartford's top performer at five of eight tournaments, including the Big Sky Championship, where he tied for fourth. Landing five top-10 finishes, he earned medalist honors at the Hartford/Blackledge Invitational and was the runner-up of the Hartford/Tumble Brook Invitational.
In three seasons at Hartford, Schwab combined for a 74.27 stroke average, marking the third-lowest score in program history behind
Evan Russell (72.47) and Ambrose Abbracciamento (73.55).
Schwab is the first Hawk to garner Division I PING All-Northeast Region honors since
Evan Russell ('16) took home the award in four straight seasons, from 2013 to 2016.
