KINGSTON, RI. — Freshman Camryn Luginbuhl delivered a game-high 22 kills to lead the Hartford volleyball team in a sweep over Merrimack in straight sets to open the first day of the URI Invitational on Friday afternoon. 

The Hawks improved to 2-5 on the season with the win, while the Warriors fell to 0-8 on the 2021 campaign.
 
HARTFORD 3, MERRIMACK 0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-13)

SET ONE: The Warriors jumped out to an early 15-5 advantage to open the set before Hartford called a timeout. After battling back to cut the deficit to 23-20, the Hawks went on a 5-2 run to take a 25-24 lead to force a Merrimack timeout. The Warriors tied it out of the timeout, however, the Hawks responded with two straight points, capped by a service ace from Kaleigh Fitzgerald to steal the set 27-25.

SET TWO: The two sides traded points to an 11-11 tie until Hartford went on a 5-1 run to go up 16-12 to force a Merrimack timeout. Warriors cut the Hawks' lead to 17-14, before Hartford outscored them 8-6 to close the set with a 25-20 win.

SET THREE: The Hawks maintained momentum into the set, jumping out to a 14-2 advantage they would not relinquish. The lead proved to be too much for Merrimack, as Hartford coasted to a 25-13 set win.

HARTFORD NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: Luginbuhl led the way with 22 kills and added five digs … senior Alex Lucero contributed a game-high 15 digs … sophomore Morgan Galligan compiled 34 assists.

Hartford will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 11, when they close play at the URI Invitational with two matches. The Hawks will face host-team URI at 10 a.m., before concluding the tournament with a 4 p.m. contest against Rider
