Volleyball Falls Against CCSU in Home Opener

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Freshman Camryn Luginbuhl delivered a game-high 11 kills to lead the Hartford volleyball team, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks fell to in-state rival Central Connecticut in straight sets in the opening match of the Hartford Hawks Invitational inside of the Hartford Volleyball Gym on Thursday afternoon. 

The Hawks fell to 2-8 on the season with the loss, while the Blue Devils improved to 3-7 on the 2021 campaign.

CENTRAL CONNECTICUT 3, HARTFORD 0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-19)

SET ONE: The two sides traded points to an early 2-2 set tie before CCSU outscored Hartford 7-3 to take a 9-5 lead, forcing a timeout from the Hawks. Hartford responded with three straight points out of the timeout to trim the deficit to one, however, the Blue Devils countered with six consecutive points to take a commanding 15-8 lead to force a second Hartford timeout. The deficit proved to be too much for the Hawks, as they eventually fell in the set, 25-12.

SET TWO: CCSU jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the set, forcing a Hartford timeout. Out of the timeout, the Blue Devils built its lead to 10-4 before the Hawks responded with an 8-3 run to trim the deficit to 13-12, forcing a CCSU timeout. The Hawks knotted the set at 13-13 out of the timeout, but the Blue Devils countered with a 5-1 run to take an 18-14 lead to force a Hartford timeout. The deficit proved to be too much for the Hawks, as they fell in the set, 25-15.

SET THREE: The Hawks used an early 8-2 advantage to jump out ahead of the Blue Devils, forcing a timeout. Luginbuhl got the action started with four straight kills to spark the run for the Hawks. CCSU countered with a 5-1 run of its own to cut the Hartford lead to 9-7, forcing a timeout from the Hawks. Out of the timeout, the Blue Devils scored five straight points to take a 12-9 lead in the set before a Robin Helms kill halted the CCSU run. The Blue Devils built their lead to as much as 18-10, holding on for the eventual 25-19 set win and match victory.

HARTFORD NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: Luginbuhl led the way with a game-high 11 kills and added five digs … senior Alex Lucero contributed a game-high 22 digs … sophomore Morgan Galligan compiled a game-high 21 assists … Isabelle Roufs tallied a game-high four service aces for the Blue Devils.
