Women's Hoops Falls to Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Sophomore Paula Maurina scored a team-high 15 points as the Hartford women's basketball team dropped a 77-60 decision at Vermont this afternoon. The Hawks fall to 1-15 overall and 1-4 in conference play while the Catamounts improve to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the America East.

The game started out with both teams trading baskets, as a Abby Streeter three tied the game at 9-9 with 4:42 left in the first. Vermont would take a slight lead, but a Sierra Smith layup in the closing minute cut the deficit to one as the Catamounts lead, 14-13 after the first. Paula Maurina leveled the game back up early in the second, sinking a triple to even the score at 16-16. The Catamounts would respond with a 7-0 to open up the score. However, the Hawks responded with a quick 4-0 run of its own, capped off by a Streeter layup to pull back within three, 23-20. Vermont would use a 12-2 run to end the quarter, taking a 37-24 lead into the half.
 
Hartford opened the second half strong, going on a 7-2 run, capped off by a Irene Primo three to cut Vermont's lead to 39-31. However, the Catamounts responded with an 8-0 run, pushing its lead to 16. A Nayeli Dowding three at the 2:06 mark brought the Hawks back within single digits as Vermont led, 54-47, but the Catamounts would lead by 12, 59-47, at the end of the third. The deficit proved too much for the Hawks in the fourth quarter as Vermont took home a 77-60 victory.

  • Streeter joined Maurina in double-figures, scoring 11 points
  • She was a perfect 4-for-4 from three, including a 3-of-3 clip from three
  • Smith had a solid day off the bench, scoring eight points while grabbing a team-high 6 rebounds
  • The Hawks shot extremely well on the day, shooting 50.0 percent from the floor and 60.0 percent from three
  • The Catamounts limited Hartford to two free-throw attempts on the afternoon
