Maurina Scores Career-High 23 Points as Women's Hoops Defeats Binghamton, 59-57, In Overtime

VESTAL, N.Y. — Sophomore Paula Maurina scored a career-high 23 points as the Hartford women's basketball team came back from an 11-point deficit to take down Binghamton, 59-57, in overtime. The victory was the first time since the 2017-18 season that the Hawks won in overtime. Hartford improves to 2-16 overall and 2-5 in conference play while the Bearcats drop to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in the America East. 
 
HARTFORD 59, BINGHAMTON 57
Hartford started the game out strong, utilizing five points from Paula Maurina to take an early 5-2 lead. Binghamton would fight back, using a 6-0 run to take a 8-5 advantage at the 4:30 mark in the first. The two sides would trade buckets in the closing minutes as Binghamton held a 10-9 lead after one.  The Bearcats carried its momentum into the second quarter, opening the gap up to five, 14-9, with 8:34 left in the half. Brianna Williams put an end to the run with a pair of free throws before an Abby Streeter three cut the deficit to 16-14. The Hawks kept the game close, tying the game up at 18 all after a Streeter jumper with 3:11 remaining. Binghamton would go on a 4-0 run to regain the lead and would enter the halftime break up, 23-20.
 
Hartford would tie the game midway through the third quarter, 25-25, after a Maurina jumper. Binghamton would start to pull away however, using an 11-0 run to retake the lead. The Bearcats would continue to fend off the Hawks, holding a 39-31 lead after three. After a Binghamton jumper started the fourth quarter, Hartford began its comeback. An 8-0 run, capped off by another Maurina basket, pulled the Hawks within two, 41-39. The Bearcats would increase its lead to four, but the Hawks got hot, exploding for a 10-0 run, taking a 49-43 lead. However, the Bearcats got back in the game, tying the score at 50-50. Irene Primo had a chance to give the Hawks the lead late, but a missed three sent the game into overtime.
 
The two sides would trade baskets in overtime until a Maurina jumper gave the Hawks a 57-56 lead with 1:31 remaining. Binghamton would sink a free throw to tie the game late, but another Maurina basket, capping off a career-best 23-point outing, secured the win for the Hawks, 59-57.
