Hawks Come Up Short in Sunday Afternoon Matchup Against CCSU

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore Nayeli Dowding and freshman Zaiha Minnis finished with career-highs of 15 and 13 points, respectively, as the Hartford Women's Basketball team dropped a 69-55 decision against Central Connecticut State Sunday afternoon. The Hawks dip to 0-11, while the Blue Devils move to 3-7 on the year.
 
CCSU 69, HARTFORD 55
The Hawks would take a two-point, 19-17 lead in the first quarter, after Minnis scored eight of Hartford's 19 points in the opening frame. The Blue Devils would respond coming out of the opening break, kicking off the second on a 5-0 run. After a slow start to the second quarter on either side, junior Kymilondra Nance entered the game with 6:25 remaining and made an immediate impact. Nance converted on a driving layup and drew a foul for an and-one opportunity to tie the game at 24 even. CCSU would then go on an 8-0 run to close out the first half with a 38-34 advantage.
 
Down four coming out of the halftime break, the Hawks used an 8-0 run of their own, capped off by a midrange jumper from freshman Elena Houghton to tie the game at 42 a piece. Both teams would trade buckets throughout the remainder of the third, as Hartford kept the score within striking distance at 51-47 heading into the fourth. The Blue Devils however found a way to open up their advantage, using a 9-0 run to close out the final minutes and take a 69-55 victory over the Hawks.

  • Dowding led the Hawks scoring a career-high 15 points, while Minnis finished with a career-high 13 points of her own
  • Forbes added 10 points off the bench on 50 percent shooting from the field
  • Senior Irene Primo dished out a season-high five assists
  • Sophomore Brianna Williams made her season debut off the bench, scoring one point and grabbing a team-high five rebounds
  • Hartford as a team outshot CCSU from beyond the arc, shooting 33.3% (7-21) to the Blue Devils 20% (2-10)
  • Belle Lanpher led all scorers, finishing with 16 points for CCSU
