ORONO, Maine — Sophomore
Paula Maurina scored a game-high 18 points as the Hartford women's basketball team fell, 71-56, to Maine on Wednesday. The Hawks fall to 2-22 overall and 2-11 in conference play. Maine, who were led by 17 points from Caroline Bornemann, improves to 14-10 overall and 11-3 in the America East.
MAINE 71, HARTFORD 56
The two sides traded baskets back and forth, as the Hawks gained a 5-4 lead after an
Abby Streeter three and a
Paula Maurina jumper. Maine and Hartford continued to trade punches, until six straight Maurina points gave the Hawks a 15-12 lead with 2:58 remaining in the first. The Black Bears would pull back within one, but a Ingram reverse layup saw the Hawks lead, 17-14, at the 1:47 mark. Maine would tie the game a few seconds later, as the game was deadlocked at 17-17 after one. The Hawks and Black Bears continued to trade blows early on in the second, as
Lya Farcy knotted the score at 21-21 with 6:43 left in the half. Maine would use an 8-0 run to open up a gap, before Maurina cut the Black Bear's momentum with a three. Maine however, would enter the halftime break up, 31-24.
Hartford would start the second half strong, using an early 5-0 run, capped off by a Streeter three, closing the gap to 31-29. Streeter would come up big again for the Hawks a few minutes later, draining another triple to cut Maine's lead to 36-32 at the 5:36 mark. Hartford continued to mount a comeback, using a Farcy layup to pull back within three, 38-35 with 3:17 remaining in the third. However, Maine would extend its lead back to eight, going in the fourth quarter with a 49-41 lead. Maine would continue to increase its lead in the fourth quarter, with the deficit proving to much for the Hawks as they fell, 71-56.
