Men's Hoops' Second Half Comeback Falls Short as Hawks Drop 88-82 Decision at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Senior Austin Williams scored a game-high 27 points as the Hartford men's basketball team second-half comeback came up short, falling 88-82 at Stony Brook on Saturday night. With the Hawks trailing by eight at the half, Hartford was able to pull back within one-point, but Stony Brook held on for the win.
 
Hartford (8-17), drops to 6-7 in America East action, while Stony Brook improves to 16-11 overall and 8-6 in the league.
 
STONY BROOK 88, HARTFORD 82
Stony Brook started the game hot, taking an early 9-2 lead. Austin Williams and Traci Carter would spark a quick 4-0 run, cutting the Seawolves advantage to 9-6 at the 15:44 mark. Stony Brook responded with a 6-0 run of its own, opening up its advantage. The Hawks started to mount a comeback, utilizing a six-point stretch, capped off by a Jared Kimbrough layup, to pull back within three, 15-12, with 11:55 remaining. Williams would hit a pair of a free throws a ferw plays later, closing the gap to one, 17-16. After trading baskets, Stony Brook would take a double-digit lead, 31-21, after a 7-0 run with 4:39 left in the half. The Seawolves would lead by as much as 15 until Briggs McClain drained the Hawks first triple of the half, but Stony Brook would keep its momentum rolling, going into the halftime break up, 42-30.
 
Hartford would be the ones to start the second half hot, going on a 5-0 run, capped off by a pair of Kimbrough free throws, cutting Stony Brooks lead to 42-35. However, the Seawolves would reestablish a double-digit advantage until David Shriver sunk his second three pointer of the game, pulling the Hawks back within nine with 15:35 remaining. Shriver would come up clutch again later, sinking another triple to make the score 55-49 Stony Brook. The Hawks would continue to mount its comeback, exploding for a 9-0 run, fueled by Carter and Flowers three pointers, making it a three-point game at the 10:44 mark. Hartford kept the game closing, pulling within one, 70-69, after Shriver made his fourth triple of the half. Kimbrough would throw down a slam dunk, keeping the Hawks within one, but Stony Brook began to pull away, leading 76-71 with 3:42 left in regulation. Hartford would not get any closer as Stony Brooks sunk their free throws at the end of the game, holding on for a 88-82 victory.
