WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Sophomore
Paula Maurina scored a team-high 16 points while senior
Lya Farcy put up a career-high 14 points as the Hartford women's basketball team fell, 63-46, to Binghamton on Monday night. The Hawks fall to 2-24 overall and 2-13 in conference play. Binghamton, who were led by 19 points from Birna Benonysdottir, improves to 7-18 overall and 3-12 in the America East.
BINGHAMTON 63, HARTFORD 46
Binghamton opened up the game on a nearly 3-0 lead, but an
Abby Streeter three at the 7-minute mark tied the game up at 3-3. The Bearcats would utilize a 4-0 run, taking its largest lead of the half, 9-5, with 2:20 remaining in the quarter. The Hawks would respond with a 5-0 stretch of its own, capped off by a
Paula Maurina layup, giving the Hawks a 10-9 lead. However, Binghamton would score the final bucket of the opening stanza, leading 13-10. It wouldn't take long for the Hawks to regain its lead, going on a nearly 4-0 run at the start of the second to take a 14-13 lead. After the Bearcats swung the score back in their favor, Hartford would shutdown Binghamton. Using a 6-0 run, fueled by jumpers from
Marisa Lee, Maurina and
Brianna Williams, the Hawks took a 20-15 lead with 1:55 left in the half. Hartford would keep the Bearcats off the board for over seven minutes and forty seconds, as Binghamton cut the Hawks lead to 20-17 with 30 seconds remaining. The Hawks however would carry the score line in to the halftime break.
The Bearcats opened the third quarter strong, using a 6-0 run to take a 23-20 lead.
Lya Farcy would cut Binghamton's momentum, scoring two straight buckets to even the score, 24-24, at the 4:34 mark. Binghamton would go on a 7-0 run, reopening a 31-24 advantage. Hartford would continue to fight back, pulling within five after a Farcy jumper, but Binghamton would enter the fourth quarter leading, 36-31. Binghamton would go on fire in the fourth quarter, pulling away from the Hawks. Hartford would keep the deficit at five, 47-42, after a Maurina layup with 5:57 left in the game. The Hawks would not get any closer however, as Binghamton went home with a 63-46 victory.
