Streeter and Maurina Lead Women's Hoops Past UMBC, 74-71

BALTIMORE, Md. — Graduate student Abby Streeter scored a career-high 24 points, while sophomore Paula Maurina chipped in 23 as the Hartford women's basketball team held on a for a 74-71 win at UMBC on Wednesday night. The Hawks improve to 3-24 overall and 3-13 in conference play. The Retrievers fall to 3-20 overall and 2-11 in the America East.

Hartford would strike early, taking a 5-2 lead after the first of many Streeter threes at the 8:21 mark. The two teams would trade baskets, until a Paula Mauria layup gave the hawks a four-point advantage, 11-7. Hartford would extend its lead to five, 14-9, after Lya Farcy drove to the basket for an easy layup with 2:02 left in the quarter. Carmen Villalobos would drain a triple in the closing seconds, giving the Hawks a 20-13 edge at the half.
 
The Hawks would takeover in the second quarter, going red hot from the floor. Streeter got things going with a three-pointer to give the Hawks a 23-13 lead. A few moments later, Villalobos would hit another triple before Streeter sunk a three, giving the Hawks a 14-point lead, 31-17, at the 67:49 mark. Street's triple saw her move into third all-time in the Hawks' record books for single season made threes. UMBC tried to close the gap, but another Streeter three, paired with a Maurina layup, extended Hartford's advantage to 17. Yet another Streeter three gave the Hawks it's biggest lead of the half, 43-24, with 3:44 remaining in the second quarter. UMBC would end the second quarter on a 8-3 run however, as the Hawks went into the break up, 46-32.
 
Maurina would start the third quarter strong, fueling a 6-2 Hartford run to give the Hawks a 52-34 lead. UMBC would try and claw its way back, but another Maurina jumper at the 5:55 mark saw the Hawks lead by 18, 54-36. Maurina would score a few moments later to give Hartford its largest lead of the game, 56-36. However, the Retrievers would pull back within single digits late, using a 8-2 run to cut the Hawks lead to 60-51 entering the fourth quarter. UMBC would continue its fightback in the fourth quarter, pulling within five, 63-58. However, another Streeter triple extend the Hawks lead back to eight. The Retrievers would get even closer, cutting the Hawks lead to 68-65, with 1:56 left in the game. UMBC would make it a one-point game late, but a Villalobos layup sealed the win for the Hawks, 74-71.
