WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Senior
David Shriver dropped a team-high 22 points as the Hartford men's basketball team dropped a 83-73 decision to UMass Lowell. After tonight's result, the Hawks will be the fourth seed in the America East Playoffs.
Hartford (11-19), falls to 9-9 in America East action, while UMass Lowell, who were led by 29 points by Max Brooks, improves to 15-15 overall and 7-11 in the league.
UMASS LOWELL 83, HARTFORD 73
UMass Lowell took an early lead, going on a 5-0 run to start the game. The Hawks responded with a 5-0 stretch of its own, fueled by a
D.J. Mitchell three and a
Traci Carter layup, levelling the score with 14:36 remaining. The two sides would trade buckets until a 7-0 Hartford run gave the Hawks a 12-7 lead.
David Shriver would score the final five points of the run. The Hawks would extend the gap to as much as five, 14-9, after a
Traci Carter free throw with 9:48 left in the opening half. The River Hawks would storm back however, utilizing a 9-0 run to take a 20-15 lead. A
Briggs McClain layup cut UMass Lowell's momentum before a
Matt Hobbs corner triple tied the game at 20-20. Hartford would take a three-point lead following a Hobbs layup, but UMass Lowell would regain the advantage, 30-29, with 3:09 remaining. The River Hawks would go on to lead by as much as five, but a late McClain jumper pulled the Hawks within three, 36-33, entering the halftime break.
UMass Lowell started the second half like they started the first, using an 8-3 run to jump out to a 44-36 lead. Shriver responded with back-to-back triples, cutting the River Hawks lead to 44-42 at the 16:17 mark. However, UMass Lowell extended the gap to double-digits, leading by as-much as 13. A quick 5-0 run, featuring a
Thomas Webley hook shot and a McClain three, pulled the Hawks back within single digits, 61-54 with 9:15 remaining in the game. After the River Hawks extend the gap back to double figures, a 6-0 run by the Hawks, capped off by a Webley layup, saw Hartford trail by five, 65-60. The Hawks would pull even closer as a Shriver triple put the score at 69-65 with 3:29 remaining. However, Hartford would not get any closer as UMass Lowell went home with a 83-73 victory.
