BALTIMORE, Md. — Senior
Jared Kimbrough dropped a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds as the Hartford men's basketball team season ended in heartbreak, falling to second-seeded UMBC, 80-60, this evening.
Hartford concludes their season with a 12-20 record. UMBC, who were led by 19 points from Szymon Wojcik, improves to 19-13 record.
UMBC 80, HARTFORD 60
The two sides traded blows back-and-forth, playing to a 6-6 tie at the 16:07 mark.
Jared Kimbrough would give the Hawks the lead, 9-6, after backing down his defender in the post.
Austin Williams extended the Hawks lead to four, 11-7, after making a tough layup with 14:20 remaining. UMBC would use a 9-0 run to take a lead midway through the first half.
Traci Carter ended the Retrievers run, sinking a midrange jumper to pull the Hawks within three, 19-16. Hartford would use a 6-0 stretch of its own, capped off by a Williams jumper, to tie the score at 22-22 at the 6:42 mark. UMBC would reestablish its lead, but a 5-0 run, featuring a
David Shriver jumper and a Carter triple, saw the Hawks take a 31-29 lead with 1:40 left in the first half. The Hawks and Retrievers traded baskets to close out the half, entering the break tied, 33-33.
UMBC opened the second half on a 6-2 run, taking a 39-35 lead two minutes into the second half. The Hawks would pull back within one, using a Kimbrough layup to bring UMBC's lead to 43-42 with 14:57 remaining. The Retrievers would extend its lead back out to four, but a Carter three saw the Hawks trail, 48-47. However, the Retrievers would take a double-digit lead, midway through the second half. A Williams layup at the 7:05 mark cut the deficit back to single-digits, 62-54. The deficit proved too much for the Hawks as UMBC took home a 80-60 victory.
