LOWELL, Mass. – The Hartford softball team dropped its first America East match-up of the season in a doubleheader against UMass Lowell. The Hawks dropped game one, 8-0, and lost game two, 9-4. Hartford drops down to 11-12 on the season and 0-2 in conference play, whereas UMass Lowell moves to 17-11 overall and 2-0 against conference opponents.
UMASS LOWELL 8, HARTFORD 0 (5 inn.)
After a scoreless first inning, UMass Lowell jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the second.
Mara Sczecienski gave the Hawks a runner in scoring position after lining a single to center field followed by
Emma Curry getting hit by a pitch. However, the River Hawks would keep the Hawks off the board. UMass Lowell would add onto its lead in the bottom of the fourth, ultimately taking home an 8-0 victory in the opening game.
UMASS LOWELL 9, HARTFORD 4
UMass Lowell got off to blazing start in game two against Hartford, putting six runs up on the board in the first. The Hawks bats were held at bay up until the fourth inning where
Ally Beck gave the offense a jolt after launching a two-run shot over the left field fence, bringing the score to 6-2. The River Hawks extended their lead immediately after, tacking on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, bringing their lead up to 9-2. Hartford was able to answer with two more runs in the sixth off of back-to-back sacrifice flies from
Samantha Nagel and Beck. Despite the effort to mount a comeback and silence the River Hawks bats, the Hawks fell in game two, 9-4.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Julianna Kocenski (6-5) got the start in game one, taking the loss after allowing eight runs on 11 hits and one walk while tallying four strikeouts over 3.2 innings
- Haley Cassidy and Sczecienski recorded the lone hits for the Hawks in game one
- Caylee English (5-3) received the start in game two, allowing nine runs, five being unearned, on 10 hits and four walks over 4.2 innings of work
- Lauren Card came in for relief in both games allowing one hit in 1.2 innings of work
- Beck was the Hawks main threat at the dish in game two
- She blasted her second home run on the season and drove home three of Hartford's four runs
