WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Hartford baseball team fell, 19-8, in their series opener against UAlbany this afternoon. The Hawks fall to 5-26 overall and 4-12 in America East play, while the Great Danes move to 16-16 overall and 6-10 in the conference.
UALBANY 19, HARTFORD 8
After UAlbany jumped out to a 9-0 lead, Hartford answered back in the bottom of the third. With one out,
Kyle Hawes singled to center field before
Logan Cole also recorded a hit to get runners on first and second.
Tremayne Cobb Jr. would come up clutch with two outs, ripping a double down the left field line. Plating Cole and Hawes and cutting the deficit to 9-2. However, UAlbany would respond with three runs of their own, taking a 12-3 advantage. Hartford would pull one run back in the bottom of the fifth, using more two out magic. Hawes would reach second base by drawing a walk before moving to second on an out.
Derek Tenney would come up to the plate, lashing a single through the right side, plating Hawes and cutting the Great Danes lead to 12-3.
The Hawks would add two more runs in the next two innings.
Jake Santiago hit a solo homerun over the right field fence to lead off the sixth. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, as Cole would score after beating a tag at home on a fielder's choice play, bringing the score to 18-5. Hartford would find life in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases after singles from Santiago,
Kevin Koziol and
Daniel Burnett.
Noah Rivera then stepped up, singling through the left side, bringing home Santiago and cutting the gap to 19-6.
Ryan Knight would then draw a walk, bringing home a run before
Kyle Hawes hit a sacrifice fly to right, plating Burnett and cutting UAlbany's lead to 11, 19-8. The deficit was too much to overcome though, as UAlbany took game one, 19-8.
