ORONO, Maine. – The Hartford baseball team's 2022 season came to a close at the America East Playoffs on Wednesday, falling to NJIT, 3-2, in the opening round before falling to UMBC, 4-3, in an elimination game. With the results, the Hawks finish the 2022 season with a 13-37 record overall.
NJIT 3, HARTFORD 2
The opening game was a pitcher's duel, as neither starting pitcher allowed either offense to put runs on the board. NJIT would try and take the lead in the opening inning by loading the bases, but
Tremayne Cobb Jr. turned a 6-4 double play to keep the Highlanders from taking an early lead. The Hawks continued to play outstanding defense, turning another double play to end the third, before
Tim Blaisdell struck out the final batter in the third, and used a perfect pickoff play to end the fourth. NJIT would open the scoring however in the seventh, taking a 1-0 lead before adding another in the eighth, holding a 2-0 edge heading into the ninth. The Hawks would not go down without a fight though, as
Noah Rivera launched a solo shot to left to lead of the inning.
Devin Kellogg followed the solo shot up with a homerun of his own, tying the game at 2-2. However, NJIT would walk it off in the bottom half of the ninth, taking the opening round game, 3-2.
UMBC 4, HARTFORD 3
UMBC would take a quick 1-0 lead after one, but the Hawks wasted little time responding in the elimination game.
Ben Maycock and
Daniel Burnett lead off the innings with back-to-back hits, putting runners on second and third. Kellogg would take full advantage of the situation, hitting a sacrifice fly to center, plating Maycock and tying the score at 1-1.
Kevin Koziol gave Hartford the lead in the next at-bat, ripping a single to left field, bringing home Burnett and giving the Hawks a 2-1 edge. However, UMBC responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, retaking a 3-2 lead. The Retrievers would tack on one more, taking a 4-2 lead into the seventh. The Hawks again looked to level the score in the ninth, adding a run in the final inning. Kellogg and Koziol drew walks to get the inning going, as Kellogg would advance to third, putting runners on the corners with two outs.
Kyle Hawes would then step-up, ripping a single back up the middle, plating Kellogg and cutting the gap to one, 4-3. However, UMBC would record the final out, escaping with a 4-3 win and eliminating the Hawks from the America East Playoffs.
