Big Sky coaches tap Hartford to finish fifth

FARMINGTON, UTAH – The University of Hartford men's golf team has been picked to finish fifth in the six-team Big Sky Conference, the league announced today (January 19, 2023).

Senior Manuel Romero, who was the top golfer in three of the four fall tournaments, will be looked upon to lead the Hawks through the season.

"Manny Romero has put together his best season as a Hawk this fall and it's been great to see him playing so well in his senior year," said University of Hartford head men's golf coach Pete Stankevich. "He's been our top player for most of the fall and we look to have him carry over his solid play into the spring. With a couple of events this spring in his home state of Florida, I'm looking for great things from him the rest of the year."

Fifth-year senior Dan Frodigh, junior Conor Byrne, and junior transfer Turner Wegener also had some solid performances this fall and they all bring a lot of tournament experience to our squad that will be important as we move forward in the spring season toward the Big Sky Championships in Arizona.

Reigning champions Weber State received five of six first-place votes and was picked to repeat.

"Weber State has established themselves as the top team in the conference so far this season and they're defending champions as well," said Stankevich. "However, I also think this is the most competitive our conference has been from top to bottom since we joined in 2015. Every team in this conference is capable of winning the championship in April if they put it all together that week.

"That hasn't always been the case in this conference," Stankevich continued. "We've shown glimpses of how good we can be this fall, but we haven't put it all together yet. If we put in the work this spring and build some confidence as we progress through our spring schedule, I know we are capable of winning the Big Sky this spring."

Idaho was picked to finish second with 18 points, followed by Northern Colorado – which received the only other first-place vote – with 17 points. Sacramento State was next with 16 points, followed by Hartford (7 points) and Binghamton (6 points).

The Hawks will begin the spring portion of their schedule at the Sacred Heart Spring Invitational on March 9th and 10th in Daytona Beach, Fla.
