MGOLF Finishes Third In CCC Championship

GRAFTON, MA. — The University of Hartford men's golf team finished the 2023 Commonwealth Coast Conference golf championships in third place Friday at the Highfields Golf & Country Club.  
 
While the Hawks are participating in the CCC Championship this season, the team can't win the team title or individual medalist honors. Roger Williams University won the tournament with a team score 600 over-24.
 
Conor Byrne led the Hawks as he finished in fifth place with 149, he bounced back as he finished the first-round tying for 14th. Byrne added four more birdies from the first round which left him with six. He led the tournament with an average of 4.00 on par four holes. 
 
Tying for seventh place was Mike Amari and Turner Wegener carding eight-over 152. Amari led the tournament with 10 birdies, while Wegener had one eagle as two others had one as well. Wegener tied the tournament in 12 rounds of par which was second-most of any golfer.
 
Austin Gambel tied for 18th place with a final score of 15-over 159. Gambel finished with 21 pars throughout the tournament. Manny Romero finished round one tied for 23rd, but improved two spots to 21st. He shot his best round in the second with a 77, and finished the tournament with 161 going 17-over par.
 
DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS & NOTES
  • Senior Turner Wegener leads the Hawks in the first round, tying for ninth place and scoring five over 77. He carded one of two eagles in the first round and his 12 rounds of par were second-most of any golfer Thursday. 
  • Senior Conor Bryne was behind Wegener as he tied for 14th place, carding a six over 78. Byrne finished with two birdies and nine holes with par. 
  • Senior Michael Amari led the team with four birdies as he tied for 19th place. In the first round, he had a total score of eight over 80. The four birdies were tied for the most of any golfer in the field.
  • Graduate Manny Romero and junior Austin Gambel tied for 23rd, finishing 10-over 82. Romero had two birdies in round one, while Gambel parred out eight holes.

The Hawks will compete in their last tournament in the two-day Nassau Intercollegiate hosted by LIU in Glove Cove, N.Y. on October 23rd and October 24th.
