The University of Hartford volleyball team used a balanced attack for the straight-set (25-16, 27-25, 26-24) upset victory over Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Suffolk Thursday in the Hartford Volleyball Gym.
Freshman twins Jenna and
Jordan Murphy were pivotal in the Hawks' success at the net.
Jordan Murphy tied for the team lead with nine kills, and added three block assists, while
Jenna Murphy had a team-high six blocks – five block assists and a solo block – and five kills with zero errors.
With Isabel Labrada serving in the first set, Hartford scored five straight points as part of a 6-0 run that snapped a 14-all tie and gave the Hawks breathing room. The six-point spurt was part of a 12-2 run to give Hartford the opening set.
Each team put mini runs together with the largest lead being just four points in the second set. The set featured 13 ties, including at points 18 through 25 before back-to-back kills from
Jenna Murphy sealed the 27-25 win.
Suffolk jumped out to the early 6-1 lead in the third set, but the Hawks steadily fought back to pull even at 10. The Rams held a 17-14 lead, but five consecutive points to give Hartford the lead. Suffolk responded with five points of their own to reclaim the four-point advantage. Labrada registered back-to-back kills to knot the game at 23. After SU scored to get on the brink of claiming a set, three straight miscues gave Hartford the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX & NOTES
- Labrada finished with nine kills on 15 attempts with no errors for a .600 hitting percentage.
- Freshman Zahara Quraishi finished with eight kills, ending a string of five straight matches with at least 14 kills.
- Neither team had a player with double-figure kills.
- Sophomore Kylee Connally finished with 20 assists, marking the fourth time she had at least 20 assists in a match.
- Hartford finished with just nine hitting errors, including just one error in the first set.
- Senior Kionah Turner led the team with nine digs.
