The University of Hartford women's basketball team earned their second win of the season as they defeated Baruch College 53-50 in a non-conference match at the ARC Arena in New York, N.Y., in a close head-to-head battle.
Â
Hartford held the Bearcats to 0-of-7 shooting with three turnovers over the final 2:47 to secure the win. After Baruch connected on a three pointer to pull even, the defense took over. Hartford pulled it out hitting three free throws each from
Kendall Rieman,
Adrianna McCoy, and
Ella Marchesani.
The Hawks got to a fast start, embarking on a five-point run that would later help them finish the first quarter with a 13-10 lead. The Hawks would then finish halftime by leading by just two points, shooting 7-for-20 from the field goal.
Â
The third quarter ended in a draw 39-39 as Baruch outscored Hartford. At just the beginning of the fourth quarter, Hartford was up by one, but then Baruch fought back, and was a back-and-forth match for the lead between these two teams. In the fourth quarter, junior
Lenaijah Ferguson helped the Hawks on the glass as she grabbed five rebounds in five minutes.Â
Â
Marchesani hit a three-pointer to help the Hawks regain the lead. Still, six seconds later, junior Mia Castillo responded with a three-pointer to level the score 50-50. The Badgers got touchy as they continued to foul the Hawks and sent three different Hawks to hit free throws to finish the game.
Â
Hartford had 20 bench points. Eight of those bench points came from Marchesani, who scored second. Marchesani was three-for-eight from the field goal. McCoy added 14 points on 5-14 shooting and shooting 50% from the three-point line.
