The University of Hartford men's basketball team allowed a season-low 56 points in snapping a two-game losing streak with the 65-56 victory over Vermont State-Johnson in the Chase Family Arena in the Reich Family Pavilion Tuesday.
Hartford scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed. A three-pointer by
Trayon Rumley pushed the Hawks' advantage to 11 points with 11 minutes remaining in the game.
From there, the Badgers made their lone legitimate push in the game. Vermont State – Johnson scored 10 of the next 13 points to pull to within four. However, a three-pointer from freshman
Jared Similien stemmed the tied and sparked a run, in which Hartford tallied 13 of the next 17 points.
The Hawks led by as much as 16 in the second half, and led by 15 when senior
Beluolisah Oranye went to the bench. The Badgers scored the next six points to get within single digits. However, Hartford scored on five of its next possession to provide some breathing room.
Rumley scored a career-high 22 points and a career-high eight rebounds as he spent the majority of the second half as the lone non-freshman on the court. Freshman
Stephen Akwiwu tallied his second double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds.
INSIDE THE BOX & NOTES
- Freshman Henry Herman and Similien made their first career starts.
- Herman, who is second in the CCC in assists, finished with six assists to go along with four points and four rebounds.
- It was the second straight game of at least 30 minutes for Herman, who played a career-high 36 minutes.
- Freshman Lamonte Duffus finished with a career-high nine points and career-best six points, while freshman Kaosi Chijioke pulled down a career-best six rebounds.
- Oranye was a force on the boards with eight rebounds in just 16 minutes of action.
- All 10 players that saw action recorded a rebound.
- Hartford is now 2-1 on the season when outrebounding its opponents. The Hawks, despite being the smaller team, was plus-16 on the glass – pulling down a season-high 50 rebounds.
