Freshmen
Taryn Blevins and
Adrianna McCoy combined for 40 points as the University of Hartford women's basketball team overcame 38 turnovers to post the 90-86 win over Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Nichols Wednesday inside the Chase Family Arena.
Back-to-back three-pointers, first by Blevins and then by freshman
Kendall Rieman, early in the fourth quarter pushed the Hartford lead to eight points. The Bison were able to trim the Hartford lead to one with 1:51 remaining, but the Hawks went 7-of-8 from the foul line to secure the victory.
It took some time for the Hawks to get adjusted to the chaotic nature of the Bison's defensive nature. Hartford missed their first four shots and turned it over four times, but remained close with stout defense. The deficit was as much as five, but they scored nine of the last 11 points to take the lead after the first quarter.
The Hawks trailed just briefly in the second quarter and led by as much as five – which was the halftime lead. Hartford controlled the third period to lead by as much as 10 and led by seven at the end of three quarters.
