The University of Hartford women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped as the Hawks fell to Division II Queens Saturday, 68-55, in the Chase Family Arena inside the Reich Family Pavilion.
Queens took control by scoring the first 12 points of the third quarter, and if you include the three pointers to close the second quarter – the game-changing run amounted to 15-0. In the game-deciding third quarter, Hartford shot 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from the floor, getting outscored 19-5.
On the cusp of the aforementioned spurt, Hartford trimmed its six-point deficit to a single point and had the ball with a chance to take the lead heading into the locker room. However, a turnover and a three-pointer at the buzzer seized any momentum the Hawks had gained. The slow start in the third quarter was like the slow start that began the game as Hartford went nearly the first five minutes without a basket. Fortunately, the Hawks' defense was on point in keeping them in the game.
Queens started the game quickly by scoring the first six points, but freshman Adriana McCoy scored a three-pointer to snap the scoring drought and pulled Hartford to within three. Hartford maintained close distance to the Knights throughout the first half, trailing by as much as just six points. In fact, the Hawks tied the game a couple of times in the second quarter.
Freshman
Ella Marchesani scored a career-high 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. She was the only player in double figures, but freshman
Adrianna McCoy, and sophomore
Paige Loughman finished with nine points and combined for seven steals. McCoy had a team-high four steals, while Loughman had three steals.
Freshman
Ava Naszimento, in her first game for the Hawks, pulled down a team-high eight rebounds with five points.
