Doubleheader sweep in the Card(s)

Lauren Card allowed one run over eight innings in the span of two games, and Samantha Nagel drove in the game-winning run in both games as the Hartford softball team completed the doubleheader sweep of Manhattan Sunday at the Hartford Softball Field.

GAME ONE: HARTFORD 7, MANHATTAN 6
Hartford scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning with Nagel bringing home Kelsey Galevich with the winning tally as the Hawks came back to record the win.

The rally helped salvage what could have been a tough loss as the Jaspers took the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. A hit batter started the inning and the next batter promptly tied the game at five with a home run to left field. A double chased the starter, Kaylee English, and another double greeted Card to give Manhattan the lead. However, Card quickly settled in and limited the damage with back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to enable Hartford to get the bats going.

Just like the Manhattan seventh, the Hawks' scoring inning kicked off with a free base as pinch hitter Lauren Ackerman drew a leadoff walk. Mara Sczecienski extended her hitting streak to nine with a bloop single. As Galevich smoked a pitch up the middle, an unfortunate bounce into the runner, got the Jaspers an out.

Another pinch hitter, Carly Mayhood fought off multiple two-strike pitches before lining a single into left, bringing Sczecienski home with the tying run – setting up Nagel for her big at-bat.

Hartford got on the board with a run in the first inning and the Jaspers took the lead with a two-out single in the third. The Manhattan lead didn't last long as Galevich opened the fourth with a home run to left, and Nagel added a one-out, longball to left in giving Hartford the lead.

Both teams scored individual runs in the fifth and the Hawks added an insurance run in the sixth setting up the seventh-inning fireworks.

Nagel finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a home run, and two RBI, while Galevich was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run, and two RBI. In just her third start of the year, Shailynn Williams was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double.

Card, 4-2, earned the win, allowing one hit in an inning of work. English allowed six runs – five earned – on 11 hits over six innings of work with four strikeouts.

GAME TWO: HARTFORD 2, MANHATTAN 1
Card picked up her fifth win of the season, allowing just one earned run on six hits over seven innings to lead the Hawks to the 2-1 win to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Hartford opened the bottom of the first with three consecutive hits, including an RBI single by Sczecienski, to take the lead.

Manhattan got the run back with a single run in the fourth inning and appeared to take the lead on a sacrifice fly. However, it was ruled the runner at third left early and was called out – allowing the game to stay tied heading to the sixth inning.

Small ball helped the Hawks bring home the eventual winning run as the inning kicked off with a double by Sczecienski, who moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Galevich. Nagel brought home Sczecienski with a ground ball to second.

From there, Card navigated a little trouble to secure the victory.

The Jaspers opened the inning with a single and a one-out walk put the tying and go-ahead runs on base. A two-out wild pitch had both of those runners in scoring position. But, Card induced a game-ending groundout – back to her – for the win.

Sczecienski finished 2-for-3 with a double, run scored, and RBI.
