English leads Hawks to split

Caylee English struck out seven batters to help the University of Hartford softball team earn the doubleheader split with UAlbany Thursday in the home finale at the Hartford Softball Field.

It marked the final home games for English, Lauren Card, Kelsey Galevich, and Samantha Nagel

GAME ONE: UALBANY 10, HARTFORD 7
UAlbany scored six runs over the first two innings and held on for the three-run victory in the opener.

The Hawks made the game interesting with five runs in the fourth inning.

Anita Farkash opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a one-out single by Sarah Serrano. Olivia Wolk brought home the first run of the inning with another single, and Serrano stole home for another run. After a walk by Taylor Fitch, and an RBI single by Mara Sczecienski, things got a little wild.
Kelsey Galevich fouled out to right field, but a throwing error by the right fielder in an attempt to throw out Fitch at third went array – allowing Fitch to score. An errand throw by the third baseman to get Fitch at home, allowed Sczecienski to race home with another run.

UAlbany tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning.

Carly Mayhood was effective on the mound, allowing three earned runs in five innings of relief with two strikeouts. Lauren Card (7-3) allowed six runs – only two of which were earned – on six hits over two innings.

GAME TWO: HARTFORD 8, UALBANY 5
The trio of Serrano, Sczecienski, and Galevich combined for seven of Hartford's nine hits as the Hawks claimed the second game of the doubleheader.

They were in the middle of both of Hartford's multiple run-scoring rallies.

Serrano started the first rally in the third inning with a two-out single, it was followed by a Szcecienski single, and both runners raced across the plate on a single by Galevich. She came around to score on a Samantha Nagel double, and the inning ended as Nagel was thrown out trying to extend it to a triple. Once the damage was finished, Hartford's 2-1 deficit was a 4-2 lead.

Hartford was able to essentially put the game away in the fifth inning as Serrano singled with one-on and one-out and then moved up – along with Wolk – on a wild pitch. They scored on a Sczecienski triple, who scored on a single by Galevich. Hartford had a chance for more destruction as they loaded the bases, but couldn't scratch across more runs.

UAlbany took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning and attempted a comeback with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

English (7-8) allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts.
