Softball rebounds to earn split

WORCHESTER, Mass. - The Hartford softball team bounced back from a tough loss in the opener to salvage the doubleheader split Thursday against Holy Cross.

GAME ONE: HOLY CROSS 1, HARTFORD 0 (13 inn.)
In the longest softball game in school history, the University of Hartford fell to Holy Cross on a two-out single in the bottom of the 13th inning, snapping the team's five-game winning streak.

Senior Lauren Card kept the Crusaders off the board for 9 2/3 innings, scattering 11 hits with five strikeouts and three walks. She was great with runners in scoring position holding Holy Cross to 0-for-9 in that situation.

Hartford had its best scoring opportunity in the third inning after Emily Coffey walked with two outs, but she was thrown out at the plate when Mara Sczecienski extended her hitting streak to 14 games with a triple. The fourth inning brought another premium scoring chance for the Hawks as Kelsey Galevich and Samantha Nagel opened the inning with a single, and Azya Walker walked to load the bases with no outs. However, three straight strikeouts ended the threat.

The Hawks had another bases-loaded opportunity in the 12th as Emily Coffey and Sczecienski recorded two-out singles, and Galevich drew a walk. But, the inning came to a close with a fly out.

Holy Cross finally cashed in their scoring chances in the aforementioned 13th inning with its first hit with runners in scoring opportunity in 15 chances.

Caylee English (3-7) took the hard-luck loss, allowing one earned run on three hits over three innings with three strikeouts.

Sczecienski was the lone Hartford hitting with multiple hits, going 2-for-6 with a triple.

GAME TWO: HARTFORD 6, HOLY CROSS 5
After the two teams battled for 13 innings to score just one run in the opener, the offense opened up a bit in the nightcap as Hartford hung on for the 6-5 win.

Holy Cross, trailing by three going into the seventh, put two on the board, with potentially the tying and winning runs in scoring position. Following an error that allowed the second run to score and advance the tying run to third base, a heads-up play by Samantha Nagel got out number 21 as the batter/runner attempted to advance to second on the error.

Hartford's offense dented the plate in four of its seven innings, including a pivotal three-run fifth inning. The game-changing frame came on the heels of Holy Cross reclaiming the lead with two runs in the fourth inning.

Back-to-back two-out doubles by Olivia Wolk and Walker enabled the Hawks to take the lead for good. Wolk scored Nevaeh Terrell, who was hit by a pitch and stole second, and the Walker drove home Wolk. Szecienski waited until her last at-bat of the game to extend her hitting streak, and she singled home Walker to push the lead to two. Another insurance run crossed the plate in the sixth as Carly Mayhood led off with a single and scored on a Nagel double

English (4-7) earned the victory, yielding just two earned runs – five total – over seven innings on eight hits.
