Hawks Defeat WIT By 42 Points

The University of Hartford women's basketball team delivered a standout performance, registering eight season-low turnovers and securing their most significant victory of the year with a 42-point win over Wentworth Institute of Technology, 71-29, Saturday afternoon at the Chase Family Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion. 

The Hawks showcased an impressive defensive effort, limiting the Leopards to a limited three points in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on 23 total turnovers forced throughout the game. A remarkable 19-0 run in the fourth quarter, held for 1:55, underscored their dominance. Additionally, the Hawks achieved 50 percent shooting accuracy from the field and contributed 23 points from the bench. 

Freshman Adrianna McCoy led the charge with 22 points, shooting 9-for-19 from the field, and showcased her all-around skills with five steals and four assists. Meanwhile, freshman Sidnee Bowden contributed 11 points, displaying a sharp shooting performance at 50 percent from three and 45.5 percent from the field. 

The Hawks established control from the beginning, launching a 7-0 run and concluding the initial quarter with a commanding 18 points, limiting Wentworth to a mere six. Throughout the game, the Hawks showcased their dominance with a 30-for-67 shooting display, whereas the Leopards faced difficulties, converting only 11-for-43 from the field. Notably, every Hawk player who entered the game contributed two or more rebounds. Emphasizing teamwork, the Hawks distributed the ball effectively, amassing 21 assists. While both teams attempted 19 three-pointers, the Hawks edged out Wentworth with a 5-4 advantage in successful shots from beyond the arc. 

Notes and  

  • McCoy has now scored double digits in 12 of the Hawks' game 

  • The Leopards did not score more than 10 points in all the quarters. 

  • The Hawks outrebounded the Leopards by 10 rebounds (39-29). This is the ninth game this season that the Hawks have outrebounded a team by double digits. 

  • This marks the second occasion the Hawks have held a team to below 30 points. This game is now tied for the fourth-lowest points allowed in program history (29). 

WHAT'S NEXT   

Hartford will face off against CCC rival Roger Williams University at Chase Arena 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. This marks the second meeting between the two teams; RWU won with a victorious score of 48-34 in their previous matchup.
