Hawks Fall to Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Hartford women's volleyball team dropped three straight sets in Saturday's conference match against Roger Williams University. The final score was 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-20).

Rapid Recap:
  • The Harford Hawks and Roger Williams Hawks gave the fans an exciting opening set. Sophomore Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) slammed the first point for Hartford with a set off the hands of junior Kylee Connally (Dallas, Texas) to put Hartford on the board 1-0.  Hartford went on to gain a four point run with key plays from the Murphy sisters making a double block with Jen. Murphy and sophomore Jordan Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) stopping the play. Hartford continued their lead 6-3 over RWU.  Freshman Emily Theobald (Vernon,. N.J.) contributed a powerful kill to the next Hartford run to strengthen their lead to 14-7. Sophomore Kalle Legassey (Prospect, Conn.) made her presence known entering the court with a service ace for Hartford. RWU was determined to close this lead by forcing errors on Hartford's court, the score tightened to 15-10. Freshman Tiffany Mendez (Bay Shore, N.Y.)  was strong in this first set putting up silencing kills for Hartford, 19-13. RWU found their rhythm late in the first set with back to back runs for four points and then seven. Teams stood even at 24-24. RWU Hawks forced an error on Hartford and sealed the first set with a kill from the hands of West. RWU took the first set 26-24.
  • Hartford opened the second set with speed claiming four straight points to take the lead 4-2, forcing errors off the hands of RWU. Freshman Laila Ruiz made her impact on this match with her first minutes in the game serving up an ace, Hartford continued their lead to 7-3. RWU was still battling as they answered with a few service aces off their own from Bosco, score evened to 10-10 to set up an exciting second set. RWU built off of their momentum in this play with a five point run, 18-12. Hartford attempted to close the gap with powerful plays by Mendez and junior Juliana Robinshaw (South Windsor, Conn.) to trail RWU by three with a score of 19-16. RWU did not want to end this set like the first and ran away with kills by West and Felix; the ending score stood at 25-19.
  • Hartford and RWU started this third set with the same battle throughout these games exchanging point for point. Robinshaw slammed a spike from the hands of Connally to put the first points on the board for Hartford. Mendez was right behind serving up the first ace of the set. Hartford held an early lead 2-0. RWU quickly answered with a four point run using their momentum gained in the second set. Sophomore Liahnna Orange (Linden, N.J.) entered the game with dominating back to back service aces and then set up Jor. Murphy for a perfect kill. Hartford lead 10-7. RWU challenged Hartford forcing multiple errors to close their lead to 13-12. RWU showed consistency having stronger set plays later through the set and switched the tone of the match. RWU lead 22-18. Hartford continued fighting until the end of the set with a service ace from Connally to put some points on the board. RWU held strong and took the final set 25-20. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Mendez lead Hartford in kills and shared the lead in service aces with two, giving her 8.5 points in the match.
  • Jor. Murphy lead the team defensively with 15 digs and claimed seven points in this match.

The Hawks will travel to face off against Lesley University this upcoming Wednesday October 30th at 7:00 p.m.
