CHICAGO, Ill. - The Hawks women's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2024-25 campaign on Wednesday defeating Illinois Institute of Technology by a 61-59 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Hawks fell behind early as the Scarlet Hawks took a 7-2 lead. A pair of free throws by sophomore Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.) and layup by sophomore Ava Naszimento (Secaucus, N.J.) cut the home team lead to a single point. The Hawks took a 12-9 lead after three points from sophomore Sidnee Bowden (Canton, Ohio) and a triple by sophomore Kristen Trembley (Granby, Mass.) as Hartford would take a 13-12 lead into the second quarter.
- The Scarlet Hawks jumped back in front getting a four-point spurt over the first two minutes. Sophomore Lauren Sabia (Simsbury, Conn.) kick-started a 11-0 run capped off by a pair of finishes for sophomore Kendall Rieman (Chicago, Ill.). Freshman Emma O'Hare (Drexel Hill, Pa.) netted a three-pointer of her own with 3:25 to play in the first half as the lead was 27-19, but Illinois Institute of Technology battled back with nine-straight to close the half up 28-27.
- Sabia got the Hawks back in front to kick off the second half with back-to-back paint finishes. Freshman Maddie MacCannell (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Marchesani both had buckets as the Hartford lead stayed at three with 6:30 to play in the third quarter. The teams traded buckets with the lead hitting six points off a three-pointer by freshman Mackenzie Hohulin (Plymouth, Mass.), but a late bucket for the Scarlet Hawks had the lead at 49-45 headed into the fourth quarter.
- Marchesani drilled a huge three to start the fourth for the Hawks and with another layup by MacCannell the lead was 54-51 with 5:59 to play. Illinois Institute of Technology evened the score at 56-56, but a three by Sabia gave Hartford a three-point lead with 3:22 to play. Marchesani had a clutch layup to keep the lead at three points with 1:36 to play. The Scarlet Hawks had one final chance, but Julia Bucci missed two of three free throws as the Hawks held on 61-59.

"Our main focus today was working together as one, rather than individuals", said sophomore
Lauren Sabia (Simsbury, Conn.). "We came out strong, knowing this was our second game in two days, and capitalized on as many possessions as we have all season. This game was not only rewarding, but fun as well."

- Sabia finished the game with 13 points (6-12 FG, 1-5 3PT), four assists and two boards in the win. Marchesani registered 14 points (4-10 FG, 1-4 3PT, 5-6 FT), three assists and a pair of rebounds. MacCannell tallied eight points (4-6 FG), five rebounds and two assists. Trembley added six points (2-5 FG, 2-2 3PT), five rebounds and two assists.
- Berit Rusing led the Scarlet Hawks with 17 points (8-14 FG, 0-2 3PT, 1-2 FT), four rebounds and three assists. Julia Bucci added 12 points (4-11 FG, 3-6 3PT, 1-3 FT) six rebounds and three assists.
- The Hawks bench was piviotal scoring 29 points in the game compared to just 11 from Illinois Institute of Technology.
