Game Recap: Softball |

Double goose eggs in sweep

The duo of sophomore Carly Mayhood and freshman Alex Hassett didn't allow a run over two games as the University of Hartford secured back-to-back shutouts of Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent, the University of New England Sunday at the Hartford Softball Field.

GAME ONE: HARTFORD 8, UNE 0 (5 inn)
For the second consecutive game, Mayhood was dominant in the circle, allowing just four innings with eight strikeouts in the run-ruled-shortened contest.

Hartford scored in four of its five trips to the plate.

Graduate Mara Sczecienski opened the scoring with a two-out RBI triple in the first inning, scoring junior Olivia Wolk – who reached with a two-out double. Freshman Adelie Beebe doubled home two more runs in the third inning.

The Hawks took advantage of a pair of errors to put three runs on the board in the fourth inning, and they secured the victory with two runs in the fifth.

Beebe and Sczecienski were 2-for-3 with two RBI with Sczecienski adding a run scored. Junior Sarah Serrano was also 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

GAME TWO: HARTFORD 3, UNE 0
Hassett had her best start of the season, allowing three hits over seven innings with six strikeouts. It was the first complete-game shutout and shutout of her career. She added a career-high six strikeouts.

Hartford scored individual runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. After the first two batters reached in the fourth, the Hawks were at risk of squandering its best scoring opportunity of the game. However, freshman Bridget Bernard – in just her third start of the season – came through with an RBI single.

Sczecienski recorded an RBI double in the fifth inning, and sophomore Shailynn Williams capped the scoring in the sixth inning. She recorded a pinch-hit triple and scored as the relay throw went into the Hartford dugout.

Junior Azya Walker finished 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Sczecienski was 2-for-3 with a run scored, a double, and an RBI.
