Hawks Get Back in Win Column Following Sweep of Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Hartford women's volleyball team picked up the second win of 2024 on Wednesday night defeating inner-state opponent Albertus Magnus by a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-15) final. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks cruised to an early 5-1 lead in the first set behind a kill and a service ace for freshman Tiffany Mendez (Bay Shore, N.Y.). The Falcons made a comeback cutting the deficit to 12-11, but Hartford countered the run a 9-2 advantage of their own to score a 23-14 lead on three aces for sophomore Kalle Legassey (Prospect, Conn.). The Hawks would eventually take the first set by a 25-16 final. 
  • In the second set Hartford jumped ahead by a 5-0 score on two aces for sophomore Liahnna Orange (Linden, N.J.) and a kill for Mendez. The Hawks continued the success keeping a lead above five points throughout the middle portion of the set. The Hawks closed the set on a 10-2 spurt with three kills for Mendez, and a kill each for sophomore Jordan Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) and sophomore Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) as the visitors cruised to a 25-12 set two win. 
  • In the final set of the evening the Hawks led in the early going once again jumping ahead 7-2 with two kills by Jo. Murphy. The Falcons tried to chip away at the deficit, the Hawks maintained a strong lead in the middle of the set. The Hawks put Albertus Magnus away with six-consecutive points ended by three-straight aces for junior Sydney Ball (Enfield, Conn.).

"Our team was determined and resilient during the game today", said sophomore Liahnna Orange (Linden, N.J.). "We stuck to our practice plan for a clean sweep!"

Inside the Numbers:
  • Orange led the passing effort on the night with 25 assists to go with four aces, three kills and two digs. 
  • Jo. Murphy led the offense with 12 kills to go with six digs. Mendez added eight kills to go with nine digs to lead the team defensively. 
Up Next: 
The Hawks will travel to Clark University on Saturday to take on the Cougars and Fitchburg State University in a tri-match with 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. start times.
